I announced this race at the annual meeting, but for those who were not there, reminder, this Saturday, December 12th is Renton Rowings Inaugural 12K race  (see attachment below).  Though sponsored by Renton Rowing, the race is open to all human powered craft.  As Renton is home to the Seahawks Training facility (the position of which on the lake might have made for a better multi use small craft boathouse) -- the race will go from Renton Rowing Boathouse near mouth of Cedar River up to the Seahawks Training Facility and back.  Please register by this eve if you are sprint rower and need a spot in a team boat. ps, when you register, click on the link, which will take you to the George Pocock Rowing Foundation/Renton Rowing main page. You have to then click on Adult Rowing Programs and then you will see the hyperlink for 12K race in the list.

Flags anything that will call attention to a parade of boats. It may be wet so wear appropriate clothing for Washington rowing weather.

There will also be a potluck. You can bring whatever want to consume but no pressure. There will be food and drinks either way. 
Race Plan
 Paddle/warm-up out to the starting line then race back. The start line is a little pass the VMAC where the Seahawks train! We will be very weather dependent so it may have to be shorter than a 12K but it is still happening on the 12th so we have that to work with. This is race can be rowed at any level you want. I will go over the rates and strategies to racing a 6K. It is a straight line back so no turning or worrying about lanes to stay in. The exertion level is about the same as a fun run 5K. It is the first time anything like this has been done in rowing let alone here at Renton so it is very exciting to be a part of it.

Attached is the first draft of the agenda for the Annual meeting this Saturday.  Please review and advise me of any changes by mid-day on Thursday. 


This year we are really looking for new people to step-up and a volunteer for elected positions.  All positions are open (even president) and many current volunteers have been donating their time in various positions for well over a decade.  I promise, the level of commitment is relatively low when compared to other organizations but necessary to keep Sound Rowers and Paddlers moving forward.  Review the positions at the bottom of the agenda and think where you or someone you know may be a good fit.  We will welcome you with welcome arms and guide you comfortably into your position.

The 2015 Sound Rowers and Paddlers annual meeting will be held this Saturday 12-5-15 at the Lake Washington Rowing Club in Seattle (Fremont Boathouse) http://lakewashingtonrowing.com/home/about-us/contact-us/  at 10:00 AM.


The meeting is open to all but only members can vote.  I have received a few items to discuss in addition to the standard topics to review of: Minutes from last year, Treasures report, Insurance report, 2015 Race review, 2016 Race Schedule, Website and Webscorer update, Publicity Manager update, Race Posters, Ribbons (inventory), Washington Water Trails Membership renewal, New Business, Election of Officers, and Election of 2 board members.


If you have any additional topics that you would like to present please email me so I can have them added to the agenda.  I will send out the first draft of the agenda tonight and a final version with any updates and changes on Thursday.  Feel free to bring any snacks you would like to share with the group.

Thanks to the Budd Inlet organizers – great race today - and thanks to the weather gods for making it a bit more of an open water race!

 

I just wanted to point out (after checking my GPS trace) that the Gull Harbor turn was placed about .38 mile North of the stated position. This made the course about 8.75 miles long instead of 8.0 miles. This threw off my navigation a bit but we quickly sorted things out.

 

Turn stated position: 47° 6’ 43.58” N, 122° 53’ 50.49” W

My measured position:  47° 7'3.2"N, 122°53'46.4"W

 

If anyone has different measurements let me know – I’d be happy to share my GPS trace as a Google Earth KML file – see attached for an image of the turn and my trace.

Bainbridge Marathon 2015 Results

Here they are folks, it may be a while before they get to the website. The Start and Finish were at Fort Ward this year.  The Half-Marathon ran from Fay Bainbridge to Fort Ward.   The changes seemed to cause little trouble.  Fort Ward was cool and pleasant.

Regatta equipment needed for Budd Inlet regatta this weekend

Hello folks-

Budd Inlet race is this Saturday 9/19. Weather should be OK. Tide is high at 10:43am.

I need some help in tracking down the equipment that floats from regatta to regatta.

Steve Bennett has the iPad and the bow markers (numbers). So I'll be working with Steve to get those items.

Shane Baker has more ribbons for the race. Shane and I will be communicating.

Other items I'm looking for include:

-- The duffle bag with the race buoys.
-- the life vests
-- the box with miscellaneous items like pens and tape etc.

Does anyone know where these things are?

Ideally I'd like to take possession of the iPad by Thursday, and the buoys by Friday. I work in Tacoma and can meet folks there or farther north if that is necessary.

Here’s my revised analysis based on a start at Ft. Ward at about 9:45 and a 4 hour racer. This disagrees with yours a fair bit, except we’re both suggesting CW would be best if the predicted N wind sticks.

Overview
This estimate is for Saturday September 12, with racers starting from Fort Ward. Without considering wind, CCW may be more favorable since racers will spend less time fighting the current in Rich Passage. CCW may also have a slight advantage with the current through Agate Passage. However winds are forecast to be out of the N, which would tip the balance towards CW direction. The 9-mile E side of the island is exposed and a downwind leg is preferred.
 
Counter-Clockwise
A 3kt ebb will push racers to a quick exit from Rich Passage. On the S and SE end of the island a weak ebb will be beneficial. By the time racers reach Agate Passage (11 miles from the start) at about 11:15 a.m., they will be aided by a weak but building flood of 1.5 to 2kt. The current will aid racers on the NW side of the island, and transition to hindering them on the SW side as the flood into Rich Passage takes effect. A 2kt flood tide will hinder the entrance into Rich Passage with it weakening to 1kt near Ft. Ward.
 
Clockwise
Racers will immediately face a 3kt ebb through Rich Passage, and will also be hindered around the SW side of the island. The W and NW should be mostly slack. The entrance into Agate Passage is about 15 miles from the start - it is slack at 10:47 and builds rapidly to flood. Early arrivals will see slack or a light flood, but later arrivals will face 1.5 by 11:30 a.m. A weak flood will aid racers on the E side of the island and back into Rich Passage. One strategy would be to work hard the first part of the race to get out of Rich Passage and through Agate early, then cruise downwind on the E side of the island.

Here’s my revised analysis based on a start at Ft. Ward at about 9:45 and a 4 hour racer. This disagrees with yours a fair bit, except we’re both suggesting CW would be best if the predicted N wind sticks.

Overview

This estimate is for Saturday September 12, with racers starting from Fort Ward. Without considering wind, CCW may be more favorable since racers will spend less time fighting the current in Rich Passage. CCW may also have a slight advantage with the current through Agate Passage. However winds are forecast to be out of the N, which would tip the balance towards CW direction. The 9-mile E side of the island is exposed and a downwind leg is preferred.

 

Counter-Clockwise

A 3kt ebb will push racers to a quick exit from Rich Passage. On the S and SE end of the island a weak ebb will be beneficial. By the time racers reach Agate Passage (11 miles from the start) at about 11:15 a.m., they will be aided by a weak but building flood of 1.5 to 2kt. The current will aid racers on the NW side of the island, and transition to hindering them on the SW side as the flood into Rich Passage takes effect. A 2kt flood tide will hinder the entrance into Rich Passage with it weakening to 1kt near Ft. Ward.

 

Clockwise

Racers will immediately face a 3kt ebb through Rich Passage, and will also be hindered around the SW side of the island. The W and NW should be mostly slack. The entrance into Agate Passage is about 15 miles from the start - it is slack at 10:47 and builds rapidly to flood. Early arrivals will see slack or a light flood, but later arrivals will face 1.5 by 11:30 a.m. A weak flood will aid racers on the E side of the island and back into Rich Passage. One strategy would be to work hard the first part of the race to get out of Rich Passage and through Agate early, then cruise downwind on the E side of the island.

Thanks Tom, for a more thorough analysis than you would have gotten from me.   I totally concur with your call.  Here is my read:
If a 5 hour Marathoner took the counter-clockwise route, she would face almost no current at the Agate Pass Bridge with the Slack occurring at 10:47. At Point White, about half-way, she would have a supporting current of 1.5 kt, building through the pass.

If however, she opted for the clockwise route, she  would be fighting that same 1.5 kt current when she hit Point White, and facing an uphill 4 kt current at the Agate Pass Bridge.  Not a big choice this year.
Look forward to seeing you all on Saturday.  We'll have the usual soup and bread at the finish, also a nice selection of commemorative hats, thanks to Stoneway Concrete.

Overview
Without taking wind into consideration, a CCW direction will almost certainly be more favorable. If there is a South wind, CCW will certainly be preferred since the East side of the island is more exposed to the wind and it will be a downwind leg. Racers may wish to consider a CW direction if there is a strong North wind. This would take advantage of a downwind leg on the East side of the island, but racers would face opposing the tidal currents.

Counter-Clockwise
With a 9:30 a.m. start time, racers will enter the Passage at around 9:50 a.m. They will face a 1 kt ebb tide at the North end, at the same time there is 2 kt ebb at the South end. The current will be decreasing rapidly so the trip through the Passage should get easier rather than more difficult. During the leg along the West side of the Island, there will be a transition from a weak ebb at the N end to a weak flood towards the S end. Earlier arrivals at Rich Passage will take better advantage of the weak .5 to 1 kt ebb, since it weakens fairly rapidly and goes slack at 11:29 a.m. to noon.

Clockwise
This is less favorable than counter-clockwise. Racers headed South on the East side of Bainbridge will be facing a weak ebb tide. Rich Passage goes slack at 11:29 a.m. to noon – earlier arrivals will also face a weak ebb through the Passage. A greater problem occurs approaching Agate Passage, where the flood will be increasing rapidly and peaking at 4.2 kt at 2:10 p.m. Racers will typically be facing a 3 kt or greater flood. The earlier arrival the better.

The half marathon will, in fact, start at Fay Bainbridge Park this year, two hours after the start of the full marathon, and proceed clockwise to a finish at Fort Ward.  (the course is the same as for 35 years, but the direction will be reversed.

Due to changes in Park policy and a potential parking conflict with a group of classic auto buffs, we have decided  to make  a last-minute change that will benefit us all, at least for the day.  The full marathon will start and end at Fort Ward Park (directions follow, direct from Google maps). The half-marathon will, as usual,  start at Fay Bainbridge Park two hours after the start of the full marathon, and proceed counter-clockwise to a finish at Fort Ward.  Shuttle arrangements will, as usual, take place after the start of the full marathon.  We will be making every effort to minimize traffic at Fay Bainbridge and the parking may be limited at Fort Ward, so we encourage carpooling.  We will make every effort to start the race by 10, but will be as accommodating as possible, should there be any confusion. 
 
·         No Discover Pass is required at either park.
·         Slow paddlers may be allowed an early start.
·         Bring hydration gear; it’s going to be a hot day.
·         Got hats this year, thank Stoneway Concrete

If however, she opted for the clockwise route, she  would be fighting that same 1.5 kt current when she hit Point White, and facing an uphill 4 kt current at the Agate Pass Bridge.  Not a big choice this year.

Overview
Without taking wind into consideration, a CCW direction will almost certainly be more favorable. If there is a South wind, CCW will certainly be preferred since the East side of the island is more exposed to the wind and it will be a downwind leg. Racers may wish to consider a CW direction if there is a strong North wind. This would take advantage of a downwind leg on the East side of the island, but racers would face opposing the tidal currents.

Counter-Clockwise
With a 9:30 a.m. start time, racers will enter the Passage at around 9:50 a.m. They will face a 1 kt ebb tide at the North end, at the same time there is 2 kt ebb at the South end. The current will be decreasing rapidly so the trip through the Passage should get easier rather than more difficult. During the leg along the West side of the Island, there will be a transition from a weak ebb at the N end to a weak flood towards the S end. Earlier arrivals at Rich Passage will take better advantage of the weak .5 to 1 kt ebb, since it weakens fairly rapidly and goes slack at 11:29 a.m. to noon.

Thanks Tom!  Great analysis.  So nice of you to share.  I have a sched conflict and may not be able to make this years Bainbridge race :( -- but have a great one all who do get to do one of my favorite races.  Always a challenge, no matter which way you go.

Round Shaw Row

We had another great race yesterday going around Shaw Island. It was relatively cool, there was a light wind from the south and/or east, and the light flood tide wasn't too terrible regardless of which way one chose.

Regardless, I managed to finish within 6 minutes of the past 6 times I've finished this race since 2004: 2:23:53. How's that for consistency?!?

Unfortunately, my "new" Garmin GPS watch failed to log anything but time and miles after rounding the south end of Shaw. Sigh...
