Also, be aware that most of the "missing" photos are generally good shots, just a bit repetitious or whatever. I looked for, but couldn't find Steve or Shane's comments; would like to read them to be better informed.

I am forwarding Jim's note to the leadership of my outrigger club and organization (Wakinikona and PNWORCA), as I believe they face some of the same problems in their open water racing events that we do in Sound Rowers and Blackburn.

As Shane may have mentioned we have just begun working on - adding to and developing some guidelines for safety boat operations that he started some years ago for Sound Rowers.

If there is a discussion here and you keep us in the loop, I'll summarize our notes and send them along soon.  Also a comment or two, which Steve and Shane know I won't be able to resist.

Thanks for responding. I contacted Shirwin to begin to gather comparable information on how other races are handled, specifically from a safety perspective. I don't know if you're familiar with the Blackburn Challenge... it is a 22 mile open water race that circumnavigates Cape Ann. Last year we had 230 boats with 350 competitors, in a variety of categories...OC 6, Fishing dories, Surfskis, racing shells, etc. The conditions were poor...4-6 ft seas, and we had almost 60 boats DNF. Many boats, even those who finished, capsized at one point or another around the course, so we had a high frequency of competitors in the water, which quickly got the attention of the local Coast Guard and Harbormasters. The Coast Guard has requested that we tighten up on our safety procedures this year, so we are reviewing all aspects of what we do... what safety equipment we require of the competitors, how we check for safety equipment, how we position and employ chase boats, what kind of equipment/training the chase boat operators should have, how we communicate with the chase boats, how we monitor the progress of the race and determine whether we are missing any competitors, how we handle a competitor who abandons the race but is still on the water, etc.


Currently we require each competitor to have a PFD (inflatable ok), a whistle, a cellphone, water. We may expand that to include a compass and/or GPS. We are thinking that each chase boat should have extra PFD's, binoculars, throw rope, boat hook, hand pump, VHF radio, extra food and water, blankets, ladder. We want to provide direction for the chase boats so that they know how to respond to someone in the water (reach, throw, row, (don't) go), and also how to assist a competitor who is swamped to get back underway.


We have had problems making sure all competitors have all their safety equipment because we do not have a common launch point where all boats can be checked before they start, and trying to check at the start is difficult because the groups do not have much time between starts and we have an abbreviated window within which to start the race because of the tide. The Coast Guard has requested that we be able to tell them if someone is missing and give them a zone within which that boat was last spotted. This may not be possible as it would require us to track each competitor around the course and have specific funnel points through which all competitors must pass. Because of the nature of the course some folks stay quite close to shore while others can get a mile or more offshore, trying to find the best combination of wind, current, and wave intensity. The CG has also asked that we develop rescue guidelines for each boat category, but we may push back on that because we actually do not want the chase boats trying to haul swamped boats on board or leave the course to tow a disabled boat to shore. 


One thing I find interesting is your rule about not passing a competitor in the water. We may think about adopting that because it forces the competitors to police themselves. But, it could be difficult to enforce because of the wide spread between competitors.


I'd be especially interested to know what requirements you have of the chase boats...how many per course mile, how you deploy them, what gear they should have, what training they should have (or that you provide), whether you provide them with any written or verbal instructions about how to respond to someone in the water, a swamped boat, an abandonment. I'd also be interested to hear whether you try to track competitors around the course, and what kind of information, if any, you are expected to have for the local Coast Guard as the race progresses.

Two unrelated items: your SR origins & Sea Ranger Rowing Boat

If you look at the membership roster (SR Homepage), you will note that Don Kiesling has included a column to record how long you have been rowing, paddling, pulling, pedaling with us.  I encourage you all to plug in your SR origins by emailing the year and perhaps your first SR race to Don (surfski@...). He'll plug your info in. Thank him.   Just for the fun and history.

Also, I would like to try to paddle a Sea Ranger rowing shell as a canoe with a single blade.  Anyone know of one that I might take a dip in, perhaps a dunk, with the rowing mechanism removed? Would like to try a Merry Wherry, perhaps an Alden 16 as well.
I am playing with ideas/hulls related to open water canoe paddling.  Got ideas?  I'd like them too.

Don,

I just figured renewing members could type it in their own date on the renewal page - and that once you set up the "Racer Since. . "  entry widget there would be no need for further involvement by the techs.   No renewal; no bragging rights.  I sure wouldn't want to see you fielding every such entry "by hand."

But I think it is pretty great that you thought Reivers' idea worthy enough that you would offer to do so. Thank you for that, and for your service to this club.

 This is a good little idea, fun, informative, community building.  Who of us really cares if it's accurate? or really about "membership. "  Just include it as a column labeled, say "SR Racer since . . ." The member will enter whatever four keystrokes he wishes which, if anyone wants to dispute for whatever ridiculous reason ,the truth can be proven by a perusal of our 35 years of results. (Shane B. might punch in his SR race total, if he wished, but I wouldn't give him a whole column!)

No hassle for the tech people, fun info about our community, show  of pride for our elders, what's not to like here?

Funny enough, managing membership for several years, I've noticed that a lot of people skip years and then come back.  For example, was a member in 2011 and 2012, skipped 2013 and 2014, back in 2015.  (Probably that Peace Corps stint in Uganda, eh?!)  I think online membership payment will help with renewals, and already many folks have used it.

I would be curious to see a column showing "member since".  Although some members might not want this.  It might be awkward to have a been a member of SR longer than your declared age.  There's a few who were just babies when they first joined.  Except I think Steve B. and Shane B. were actually never babies.  They were grumpy old men when they were born.  Kind of a Benjamin Button thing.

I announced this race at the annual meeting, but for those who were not there, reminder, this Saturday, December 12th is Renton Rowings Inaugural 12K race  (see attachment below).  Though sponsored by Renton Rowing, the race is open to all human powered craft.  As Renton is home to the Seahawks Training facility (the position of which on the lake might have made for a better multi use small craft boathouse) -- the race will go from Renton Rowing Boathouse near mouth of Cedar River up to the Seahawks Training Facility and back.  Please register by this eve if you are sprint rower and need a spot in a team boat. ps, when you register, click on the link, which will take you to the George Pocock Rowing Foundation/Renton Rowing main page. Flags anything that will call attention to a parade of boats. It may be wet so wear appropriate clothing for Washington rowing weather.

There will also be a potluck. You can bring whatever want to consume but no pressure. There will be food and drinks either way. 
Race Plan
 Paddle/warm-up out to the starting line then race back. The start line is a little pass the VMAC where the Seahawks train! We will be very weather dependent so it may have to be shorter than a 12K but it is still happening on the 12th so we have that to work with. This is race can be rowed at any level you want. I will go over the rates and strategies to racing a 6K. It is a straight line back so no turning or worrying about lanes to stay in. The exertion level is about the same as a fun run 5K. It is the first time anything like this has been done in rowing let alone here at Renton so it is very exciting to be a part of it.

Agenda for 2015 Sound Rowers meeting- 1st Draft

Sound Rowers members and supporters,


Attached is the first draft of the agenda for the Annual meeting this Saturday.  Please review and advise me of any changes by mid-day on Thursday. 


This year we are really looking for new people to step-up and a volunteer for elected positions.  All positions are open (even president) and many current volunteers have been donating their time in various positions for well over a decade.  I promise, the level of commitment is relatively low when compared to other organizations but necessary to keep Sound Rowers and Paddlers moving forward.  Review the positions at the bottom of the agenda and think where you or someone you know may be a good fit.  We will welcome you with welcome arms and guide you comfortably into your position.

Sound Rowers and Paddlers annual meeting

Good Morning,


The 2015 Sound Rowers and Paddlers annual meeting will be held this Saturday 12-5-15 at the Lake Washington Rowing Club in Seattle (Fremont Boathouse) http://lakewashingtonrowing.com/home/about-us/contact-us/  at 10:00 AM.


The meeting is open to all but only members can vote.  I have received a few items to discuss in addition to the standard topics to review of: Minutes from last year, Treasures report, Insurance report, 2015 Race review, 2016 Race Schedule, Website and Webscorer update, Publicity Manager update, Race Posters, Ribbons (inventory), Washington Water Trails Membership renewal, New Business, Election of Officers, and Election of 2 board members.


If you have any additional topics that you would like to present please email me so I can have them added to the agenda.  I will send out the first draft of the agenda tonight and a final version with any updates and changes on Thursday.  Feel free to bring any snacks you would like to share with the group.
