Mercer wind report

Reivers Dustin

Not seeing much traffic on here, but shout out:

Wind report looks gusty for tomorrow's race.  I'm seeing air from SSW 10mph gusting to 30.  This is building thoughout the morning so maybe a slog from start to get around South end of Mercer, then somewhat sheltered on East side and across North side.  From Mercer it looks like we need to creep across on North side of I-90 bridge.

Lake Samish Race photos now online

Michael Lampi

Steve Scoggins directed quite a great race yesterday up on Lake Samish.

A new record was placed yesterday as to the number of photos taken by me - over 1800!

No, I did not post all 1800 photos online as a bunch didn't make the cut. Still, I feel the remaining 1300 are too many to have in a single album so I split it into two pieces.

There first album is everything from pre-race through all of the race starts. This includes the Kids Race which has some special coverage.

http://soundrowers.org/racePhotos/2016/Lake%20Samish%20Part%201/index.html

The second album has everything I took after leaving the Kids Race through the awards ceremony.

http://soundrowers.org/racePhotos/2016/Lake%20Samish%20Part%202/index.html

As always, if you want the original photo or if you think there might be another photo that you might want that didn't get put on the web and there is a gap in the photo numbering where you might be in a shot before or after that sequence, just send me an e-mail.

Enjoy!

P.S. Due to a technical glitch the directory names might not be quite correct for a few minutes. If so, try again later.

P.P.S. I think I also set a new record for pedal boats on the extended course, breaking my old record by 20 seconds or so.

Due to the difficulties of revising the results per Steve's corrections  on that prior link, I had to make the corrections on a new slate which resulted in a new link:

Racers and Steve,

Please check webscorer for times, which I've posted after a little "duh" moments with the website uploading the results. Bainbridge 2016 | Race results | Webscorer

Corrections? Please send me a note!

Cheers!

PS Traci, did I do that right?

It  was a beautiful day for racing.  Would that we had had more of you out for it.  Thanks to all who raced.  Thanks to all who helped make it a memorable day.

Full Marathon Start/ at Fort Ward, 10:00 AM.

Registration, Race meeting, then Marathon Start.
Plan for shuttles to Fay Bainbridge for Half or 20k
Start at 12:00 AM.  Don't show up without attending the Race Meeting at Fort Ward.

Same as last year.

Any confusion is on me.  Was trying to get back to the Fay Bainbridge start, but failed.

It is really difficult to find Fort Ward. I've been getting lost trying for 18 years. I recommend you copy the directions from the website, or generate your own with Google Maps.  Better yet, find them below.

Re: Photographer needed for Mercer Island Race

Hi Mike,
Put me on the long list for Guano.  If I go, I will plan to shoot instead of race. We bladed guys just can't do it all.

I might also have a lead on some Shaw photos.  Will work at it.

I am happy to take whatever photos are produced and put them in an album in the Sound Rowers web site for you.

P.S. Still looking for photos from Shaw, and for a photographer for Guano Rocks...

Unfortunately, due to work activity I won't be able to attend the Guano Rocks Race this year.

So, if someone going to the Guano Rocks race is willing and able to take photos I can later on put those photos on the web.

The Sound Rowers camera and water-resistant bag are available.

Thanks!

Looking for ride to the Elk River Challenge

Jon Harwood

Chris May is a paddler looking for a ride from the Seattle area to the Elk River Challenge - just one way - he will pay the gas. I will vouch for him; I know he's been to at least a few races. He posted on the Soundrowers Facebook page. You can contact him that way. Thanks! (anything I can do to get people here) By the way South Sound Area Kayakers are having a "play day" at Grayland Beach on Sunday, just down the road. --Jon

Pardon my most unintended omission in my last email. HUGE thanks to the ever most generous Heikkilas -- who are hosting the Tuna BarB que.  I was certainly thinking of them in my thanks, but typing faster than sluggish brain.

Thank you Vern & Janet!!!

Hi John,
Thanks or the reminder.  Is the tuna Bar-b-que Saturday eve, after the race -- or Fri eve?  Thanks again for taking charge of the race!  And thanks to Bernie (I am assuming), Bradie, and all on the generous and tasty food treats!
Hope to see you this weekend,
Debbie & Paul

Photographer needed for Elk River Challenge and Round Shaw Row

Michael Lampi

A race photographer is needed for the Elk River Challenge (7/30) and for the Round Shaw Row (8/20). The regular photographer (me) will be unavailable for these two races.

If someone takes photos for the races I'll be happy to turn them into web albums to be posted at the Sound Rowers web site. However, I won't be able to work on them until later in August.

Thanks!

PROVINCETOWN TO HOST THE 2016 COASTAL ROWING REGATTA IN THE NORTHEAST REGION.

Provincetown, Mass. – The Town of Provincetown will be the site of the 2016 Provincetown Coastal Rowing Regatta , June 4, 2016.

“We are excited about hosting this growing sporting event,” Tony Fuccillo, Provincetown Director of Tourism, said. “Rowing competitions often take place on the West Coast, and this event will now be the first of its kind in Northeast. We believe it will be a huge success and will encourage the Regatta to return in future years.”

Provincetown, known as “America’s First Destination,” where the Pilgrims first landed in 1620, has the open waters of the harbor and bay for the required distance of 8K. The town has the East-end harbor sandy beaches to launch and finish, access to the beach for athletes and spectators, a skilled harbormaster, a local yacht club, a youth sailing and rowing club, a US Coast Guard Station, a USRowing-affiliated regional club in Orleans, and many restaurants and accommodations within walking distance.

Already popular in Europe and Canada, rowing is the fastest growing sport in America for men, women and youth. The Rowing Regatta is open to single and double sliding-seat boats (recreational, racing, and FISA-approved designs). Mixed doubles and masters-level racing will be included. Families and spectators are welcome and will have the opportunity to become familiar with several versions of rowing and rowing equipment. FISA-approved boats will be available for participants to try.

Massachusetts has a long rowing history and today is home to the Head of the Charles Regatta, the world’s largest two-day rowing event, and the Blackburn Challenge, a 20-plus mile open water circumnavigation of Cape Ann.

Provincetown is one of ' America's Happiest Seaside Towns ,' according to Coastal Living magazine, and has the seashore, restaurants, accommodations, nightlife, shopping and gyms to make hosting the Rowing Regatta the perfect destination. The travel website Trivago recently named Provincetown the number one destination to stay in 2016 , and Smithsonian magazine named it one of the ' 20 Best Small Towns to Visit ' in America.
