I'm pretty sure Jeff Wong has them; they were at Budd.  He is coming to Sammamish.   Steve

Volunteers needed to help out at the Lake Sammamish Race on July 8th

Michael Lampi

Hi Folks,

I hope that you are preparing for a great 4th of July!

After this weekend on July 8th is the Lake Sammamish Race, and it looks like we should have enough safety boats to run the long course down the length of the lake.

However, we need to have a few volunteers as crew for those boats, as well as folks to assist at race HQ with the registration, food prep, photography and timing. We are already a bit short handed this year as my wife and son will be out of town and unable to help out.

If you or someone you know are available on Saturday July 8th and are not racing, then please consider volunteering!

Thank you!

Whether you are paddling OC or other "human powered craft" it looks like Commencement Bay will be fun.   Great weather has finally arrived.

16 OC-1's have already preregistered. Hawaii comes to Tacoma.

See you there.

Tony Brown makes a little Whatcom Challenge history.

Steve Bennett

I just wanted to congratulate Tony Brown for his Whatcom Challenge record performance last year in the FSK class.

His time of 1:54:05 easily exceeded the prior best times posted by Peter Marcus and me back 2002 on a day ideal for racing.

A nice bit of history that I don’t think got noticed.

Minutes from the 2016 Sound Rowers Annunal Meeting

Tyler Peterson

Sound Rowers & Paddlers Members,

Attached are the minutes from the 2016 annual meting.  I recommend all review them as it gives a window into what Sound Rowers is all about and what was reviewed at the 4 hour and 40 minute meeting.  We are always looking for new volunteers so if you see anything in the notes that you think you may be able to help with, reach out to me and I will connect you with the appropriate people.

Of note:

-We are looking for a new Race Director for the La Conner race to takeover in 2017.  This can be an individual of group of  people.  Check the race calendar and contact Greg Gilda to start a conversation.  Ideally you will work with Greg this year to get a feel for what is involved.  Greg is now the new VP of insurance and legal so he will still be very involved in SR.

-We will be setting up a safety committee managed by the Board of directors.  The details are still being worked out but capsize report forms will be refined, and assistance will be provided to race directors to help evaluate conditions and competitors.

Please contact me with any questions you may have.

Thanks you all for your help,

Tyler Peterson

Sound Rowers & Paddlers Members,

Attached is the updated agenda for the 2016 annual meeting this Saturday (12-3-16) at 10 AM.  The meeting will again be held at the Lake Washington Rowing Club 910 North Northlake Way, Seattle 98103.  We will be on the second floor in one of the conference rooms. Feel free to show up early with your boat and get a little water time using the LWRC dock.  Attendees are welcome to bring some food to share as well.

Review the attached agenda and let me know of any additions.  There are a few important items to be aware of:

1)      We will need a New VP of permits and insurance

2)      We will need a new Race Director to the La Conner Race for 2018 and this person (or persons) should help in the management of this year’s race for a seamless transition.

3)      All other officer positions are open.  This is an easy way to keep our club up and running.  Let me know if you have any questions about their responsibilities.

4)      Let me know who currently has the Race gear (Numbers, PFDs etc..) as I would like to inventory what we have.

I have also attached the minutes from the 2015 meeting for review as we will be approving them on Saturday.  If you would like, please print out copies of these documents as only a limited number of paper copies will be available at the meeting.

Spread the word so we have a big group and contact me with any questions.

Thanks,

Hey all racers and supporters,

The annual meeting is a great place to get involved with the operations of our club. Sound Rowers is run by volunteers, and like any volunteer organization it is a labor of love. A club only stays growing and vibrant with active participation. Join the efforts behind the club and share the love. It is a great group of people.

My Maas Aero Stolen this am

Debbie Natelson

Heads up if you notice anyone/any ad trying to sell a Maas Aero -- open ater rowing shell -- mine! :((

Stolen around 4am this am.... creeps stole a commercial Fire Safety Inc van and have been prowling up and down alleys of North on robbing spree.  Neighbor  though their activity suspicious and sent out a video clip. To my horror, I saw what looked like my surfski or shell on top of  the bandit van!

Deb's Maas Aero
Older model, around yr 2000.   White with grey stripe edging on decking. .
serial number XBQ21483B000.
Note:  that last "B" might be an 8 or H.  Number was hand etched into hull, but right under railing. Hard to read.   Photo attached

There are many distinguishing  characteristics about boat that make it recognizable.  (a repair patch, some scratches, and hairline surface cracks on bottom).  Even a soft spot on bottom.
Paul did super repair job once on rigger as well -- but done so well, might not even be detectable.

Despite its dings and cosmetic boo-boos, I I have been through so much with this beloved boat: Many SoundRowers races; 43 mile SanJuan Challenges, boat camping through the San Juans, Open Water Rowing Champs, and many crossings with huge waves crashing over my head -- all with the shell remaining sunnyside up, including, this year's super rough Great Cross Sound race which few dared to even attempt.  I loved that boat so.

Please notify me if you see any new -- but old - Aero's for sale or on the water.  They stole the boat around 4am, right out of my yard.  I have the seat though, so good luck trying to sell it/row it without it .  Seat replaceable, but a well deserved challenge.

Steve Wells and Storbs -- please take note if anyone inquiring about  used Aero or buying replacement seat.

I can send pics of boat once I dig through the jillions of SR pics, but wanted to send out this for immediate headsup.

Here's a link to hideous pic of me after GXS race , but shows at least top of the shell

Thanks all.  Lock up all your beloved boats, bikes, and toys,
Debbie Natelson

Re: Waivers for team members and listing of team members

jeffwinnevada

Hi all,
I queried Webscorer help and received two helpful replies:

1.  regarding "signing" waivers for teams:

Here’s the reg page - which uses the participant list form the team reg when picking “Team name":

Regards,
Vesa Suomalainen

If you click on "Confirmation list" you see the team "The Bobs" and in a smaller font on the next line a list of "members".
On the registration page, 40 characters will fit in each of two fields for team member names--that would permit full listing of team member names for the average name if FN+LN doesn't take more than 80 divided by the number of racers.  example: a 4x can list names in full if the average # of characters for FN+LN is 80 divided by 4 = twenty characters.  Dragon Boats:  fuggedaboutit.
This second link isn't as clever as the first link above because it doesn't have a field that allows the racer to name the team, if that matters.  I just made a new "catty gory" seen in the drop down menu called "TEAM MEMBER WAIVER" which appears in the "Confirmation List"
Things could get messy if team members change, but a team can simply register again with the corrected names--the director need not dig into the registration to change data.
If an online waiver is legally acceptable, this would streamline race day.

It's that time of year again.  The Sound Rowers and Paddlers annual meeting is fast approaching (Dec. 3 @ 10:00).  Attached you will find the preliminary agenda for the meeting.  Please review it and contact me within the next 2 weeks if there are items that you feel need to be added.

Please also consider volunteering/ nominating someone/ nominating yourself for an officer position with Sound Rowers & Paddlers.  Many of the officers and board members have been in positions longer than they would like to admit and are more than happy to have new people get involved.  The time commitment is limited and we can work with you to make sure you know all that is needed to be successful.  There may also be the opportunity to take over for a retiring race director and you can have the opportunity to manage a race!

The race schedule dates are being submitted to Don Kiesling by the  race directors and will be included on the final draft of the agenda sent out about a week prior to the meeting.

The meeting this year will again be at the Lake Washington Rowing Club in the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle 10 AM on Saturday December 3rd.  910 North Northlake Way, Seattle, WA 98103, Second floor.

I welcome your feedback and look forward to all being involved.

Hi,
Thanks Tyler.  I have some general questions.

1.  For Budd Inlet, I noticed only mild interest by outrigger canoe paddlers relative to the potential number of oc1/oc2 paddlers, even though PNWORCA had no events on that weekend.  I suspect two likely issues:
    A.  Race fatigue--too many races in too few weekends from mid-August thru mid October.  or
    B.  Sound Rowers' publicity efforts just didn't excite the outrigger community enough to drive down to Olympia.  Maybe A. overrode our efforts?

2.  Also, does Webscorer have a setting that permits the listing of full names in a 4x if not a dragon boat?
3.  How many rowing friendly PFD's do we still have?

4.  Does the waiver in webscorer preclude written waivers?

ThanksJeff W.

I looked into this a while back, and there is a deliberate hard limit on the number of characters in a name so the results will display on a single line. So we have to work within those limits.

4.  Does the waiver in webscorer preclude written waivers?

Several of us have asked this, but no lawyers have stepped in with a definitive answer. Would be nice to eliminate some paper...

Hi,
Thanks Tyler.

Thanks
Jeff W.

Thanks,

Re: Bellingham weather delay

thx Steve.  It was one of Peter's crazier ideas (I think).

If you haven't seen this thing: It's set up as a three-boat relay.  Teams of three boats are compiled just prior to 'race' start.  They are constructed so that teams supposedly balance.  That is beginners are paired with experts.  The event is in Lake Padden - normally a flat, even swimmer friendly venue.  It works for almost any boat, except maybe fast rowers, OC-6's, dragon boats ... there are some sharp turns and it is a short event.

No fee, just bring a donation to the local food bank.  The results are that people, even spectators with no familiarity with the sport have a good time.  There is no way to predict top finishers.  And actually not many care about finish placing.  Except that each person gives it their all.

Thanks Reivers,

This is one non-Sound Rowers event that Sound Rowers should be heartily endorsing.

Nice work again, Peter Marcus.
