A Wee Tad

Reivers Dustin

it's a Wee Tad Fiddly of a morning.  (That means WTF in phone text speak.)  The youngsters under 60 will think this is the perfect time to go for a paddle.  My advice:  go to a small lake where you can swim to shore and find your boat after youthful butt cheeks get air-lifted out of their seat.

I'm staying home to invent a new video game about surfski paddling.  In which the top secret game-hack is to have a very low paddle stroke.  And if your boat taps into another boat that you are drafting, all of a sudden you get eaten by a giant shark.  Even if you're in a lake.   Or in the parking lot putting your boat on your car.  (Don't be bumping into nobody's boat.)

reply with any requests for 'game features'.

Mercer Race Report

Reivers Dustin

End of another season of SR races.  Kevin reminded me to go to the SR annual meeting.  which I never go to.  But should.

Parking is such a bugger for this race I showed up at 7:50 and got the last spot in the nearest lot.  Had to roll out at 5am to do it and I think lost a whole bunch of brain neurons in the process.  Of course Duncan rolled in last minute and snagged a great spot by pure outrageous luck.  Not only that I think he scored a ribbon in short course HPK.  But must be present to win and he had bailed out early to go shopping for some new leather bedroom underwear.  I know there was some heavy action in short course.  At least one dragon boat and several SUPs.  They had a harsh pounding against the wind for half, then due to lake geography didn't get good rollers coming back.  Pretty hefty turnout for both long and short course.  Lots of rowers and lots of OC boats. Not so many HPKs.

Conditions were lumpy with steady south wind.  It was not big like last year.  So naturally I did my WBMAC thing (Whining, Bitching, Moaning And Complaining).  Maybe I was getting my excuses aired out early.  Just can't seem to keep a sock in it.  So we did the Big Mass start.  Thought I was going to get eaten by a couple of dragon boats, but I pulled ahead of them.  I had a good line where I was picking my way along the lee shore until I had to cross to Mercer.  That's where Tony climbed over me in that stretch.  I could see Tracy L. up ahead giving a clinic to a two seat rower.  Way off in the distance I could see paddle splash from Greg B, Nicholas C. and Kevin.  Tracy was flying the new Epic V-11 and it looked like magic for her body type and those water conditions.  So Tony gapped me even more going around the rebound South side of Mercer.  He stayed ahead as I tried to get something out of the short chop going north.  I couldn't make it work for me and in fact a strong OC-1 guy flew by on the rides I could not get.  Dang.  So I settled in for that long pull across the north side chasing my fantasy way far ahead.

Kinda weird but the wind was blowing us back West across the top of Mercer so we were cruising pretty well.  I could hear a dragon boat behind calling cadence and it made me pull a little harder.  Soon we could see the last bridge and feel the south wind in our faces so the work got harder.  I noticed the OC-1 guy push hard to get into the lee of the bridge, while Tony was staying direct line.  This put Tony against the teeth of the wind and sure enough he began to sag.  Just in the last mile I caught Tony.  So of course I chatted with him calmly - the way David always does.  I know that freaks me out when David does that, so what the heck.  By golly it worked.  Tony caved so then I started trying to reel in the OC-1.  We had a heart attack finish, but I could not get past him.

That's my story.  I guess Greg took down the four seat rower.  They claim that he drafted then end-sprinted them.  It was really cool to see so many OC boats and dragon boats.  Not so cool to get schooled by one, but still worth it.  Great looking boats, cool guys and gals.

Another great year in the books as they say.  Everyone should go to the annual SR meeting.

Re: Lake Samish

Michael Lampi

Great write-up, Reivers! I truly wish I could have been at the race. Unfortunately, I was in NYC getting off a cruise ship (working, not playing) and onto an airplane to fly home. I think you folks had more fun!

I *did* send in a substitute photographer: my wife. Her photos are being posted to the Sound Rowers web site even as I write this.

Regardless, you can send Hilde's photos to me and I would be happy to post them.

Best regards,

Michael Lampi

Lake Samish

Reivers Dustin

Just a kick to have so many racers.  Kelowna rocks.  I'm going to need some splashy waves to get over that flat water woopin laid on by some of my fellow old barnacles.  There were ten of us that broke the one hour barrier.  Hilde took a bunch of photo's and I noticed the absence of our Soundrower photo journalist.  Who can I send these photos to?

There was a young lady in a K-1 in same pack as me.  Don't know who she was, but fought like a tiger the whole race.  She powered by when I got tangled up with an OC-2 and never saw her again.  Also never saw DeMow, Tony, Duncan, John George ... my pack abandoned me.  Me and MG ended up clawing our way through weed-love for a while.  What the heck with weeds out in the middle like that?  Somebody sprinkle some random greenery out there?  Hilde got a great shot of a four seat rower getting totally hammered in the duck weeds.  haha, feel the love baby.

One great help for the start sequence was Peter doing crowd control before the start line.  His native Public Address system helped stage up quite a few who were a tad bit befuddled.  But even so, maybe we have to assign a Valet for DeMow.  And did someone specifically tell Tony that there was a swim leg?  That almost slowed him down enough for me to stay with him.  New rule:  anyone over 12 that's faster than me must get off the boat mid-race and check the rudder for weeds.  Uh.  maybe over 6.  There were some awesome kids out there.  Wish we could do this race twice a year.  Good stuff Steve S. and crew.  The jewel in the crown you guys.  Just need some kind of a wave machine.

B'ham excitement

Reivers Dustin

There's a great S.R. event coming up, mixed in with a couple of goofy things.  The Bellingham Traverse is today.  I've never done it, but hey outdoor play is all good.

Another oddball is the Paddle for Food.  It's in Lake Padden with all proceeds to the Bellingham Food Bank.  All human powered boats welcome.  The format is relay teams made up of most likely mix of fast boats with slower.  Teams are made up after everyone registers.  The course is tight so rowing is disadvantaged.  When Peter pulled this idea together not much was expected from it.  However, the event has become 'a thing'.  Maybe because it's short, mixed teams and quite informal.

The race has accommodated true beginners since Padden is pretty small and protected.

rd

Here's Peter's heads up:

Hey Everyone,

Lots happening the next few weeks!!

Traverse Today, Last Interval Session for the season on Monday at Padden, Lake Samish Race next Saturday, and the "annual Paddle 4 Food relay on Sunday the 15th!!

More to follow ......Hope you all can make it.....Lake Padden, Registration opens at 0900 on SUNDAY the 15th!!

Relay format, you register singular, we organize the teams, three separate starts.

ENTRY FEE:  Cash or check (as much as your willing to part with) for the food bank and/or as much NON-perishable food  your willing to donate!!

Its the "race of the year" don't miss out!!   More to follow, Questions (360) 739 2257

Re: Bainbridge Marathon.

Reivers Dustin

Kevin also gave up going to Larry Goolsby's wedding to run Bainbridge.  The wedding turned into the social "do" of the season.  And not just because I drank too much and danced like a teenager.  Other people did as well.

I might have felt better the next day if I'd have done the race.

Bainbridge Marathon.

Steve Bennett

The course is the same old, same old.  Simply drop-dead Salish Sea  gorgeous.

But the new Bainbridge Marathon Race Director is smarter, faster, younger, prettier, and more creative than what this race has had for many many years.

Come on out and see what Kevin has put together.

2017 Great Cross Sound report

Reivers Dustin

Jeff K ran a fantastic race.  Crisp pre-race mtg, organized and coordinated with ferry traffic.  Oh and he provided a very, very large whale showing.  Not everyone got to see it, which was maybe a blessing.  The whale didn't give a crap who or what was in the water around him, just moved on across the race line a mile or so off Alki point.

The start horn sounded at Nine AM straight up.  There was a light northerly breeze and light flood tide.  I cannot recall ever doing this course in a flood tide.  Maybe I'm not the only one because most boats got swept down channel and gave some of us lurkers a change to close gap.  I found myself in a party of four for the event.  John Day took point with various of us trying to close up on him.  David S jumped on John's draft early then half-way across lost the ride.  DeMow jumped over David with Mark W. on back for a while.  I noticed the crowd being swept down channel so I ferried up early and got past DeMow & Mark, but couldn't quite close on John.  I got closer at the rock, but John was able to squeeze more out of his boat in that flat stretch from the rock to the turn buoy.  Also right in that area DeMow and Mark caught me.  After the buoy Gentleman Dennis jumped over me, but I was able to hang on his bow wave.  So our little three-pack hammered back across looking hungry over at John's 100 yard gap.  I was thinking that sweeping tide would still be running so I pointed up thinking that John would get swept down and give us an opening.  The boat wakes and counter-current (wind against current) gave us a little bouncy-bouncy sometimes.  The weeds were in bloom as well.  About half-way back to the finish we saw the whale.  Huge breath-cloud and a whole dang lot of animal showing behind it.  I talked with john after and he was close enough to experience discomfort.  Nearing the finish I was able to use some of the little runners from the North breeze to close up on John and gap DeMow and Mark.  But not enough to finish before John.  He did get into some of the sea-wall rebound and slowed a bit.  But I had pointed too high and gave away too much distance.  This should teach DeMow and Mark to not trust my navigating.  Some of this navigating stuff played into the grudge match between Greg B and Double-Ski of Kevin and Paul.  Also, the chop and currents took a lot of the edge away from the hot shot rowers.  So check upcoming listing of results.  Which reminds me, Michael L once again captured photos of us all.  I think I saw him in time to wipe the slobber off my chin and drag up a sort of smile.

It was one of the finest mornings I can recall for this race.  A good day for spectators.  The support crew was on point, snacks were plenty (lots of M&M's).  Of course the parking sucked, but you know, trade-offs.  Great to see Shane even though he couldn't paddle.  Probably between surgeries again.  Some newer paddlers.  I talked to a really neat couple.  The guy was raised in Brazil, but lives and plays in Seattle now.  I was going to join the B'ham crew for munchies after, but they were already teasing me about my miracle garbanzo bean diet.  And the dang place didn't even offer any garbanzo beans.

2017 Round Shaw Row

Reivers Dustin

So afterwards at the Shaw ferry landing everyone sat around telling stories about the race.  They all begged me to do a race report.  Probably because they were weary from the race and were having a lot of fun yanking reivers almighty around.

So here.

Typical SR race where each race has wierd quirks and features that the general public would find bothersome and irritating, but we paddlers and rowers think are so charming and wonderful.  Maybe an analogy would be that special class of folks who find Sharpeis to be cute.  So like that, the ferry was a hassle and cost bucks, but the race was free and we all got to practice backing our cars down the ramp on the Orcas landing.  When we got to the county park everything shifted into "island time" and nothing got done and nobody cared.  Cell phone coverage was nutty.  Someone complained and Shane said, "just take two steps to the right".  Post race refreshments were lots of water, some jars of chunky peanut butter a jar of smuckers jam and some loaves of bread.  Oh. and a rhubarb-berry pie that was out-of-the world good.  Oh yeah, no plates.  So Peter H. showed us how to load up a slice of bread with a glop of pie.  But let's talk about the main event.

Web weather was screaming about "small craft advisory".  Hazy on the ferry over, but wind picked up once we got to the park.  White caps were getting awful frisky coming into that bay and we're all thinking San Juan channel would be nuclear with the heavy ebb.  Nobody wanted to take that on for their last half so we all went clockwise.  It seemed like the race director looked ten years younger once that was solid.  Even though it was a small group all the major paddler/rower groups were represented.  Maybe 14 boats.  I was sure the four seat rower would smoke the day.

We started at 11 with a few slow to the line.  The R-4, Kevin O. and Paul C. ran out ahead.  Somewhere in there the Knakals (R-2) got by me.  I clung to the illusion of youth not far behind.  First leg was against that wind, but it was easing.  Then we got mixed rollers from the dyeing wind and big boat traffic.  Leaders hit the point turn into San Juan channel and it was a gol dang rodeo show.  My thoughts were something like, "shit ahoy, I don't want that".  so I snuggled close to shore and crept past everyone but KO.  These monkey shines continued up the channel with everyone swapping places except KO.  He had gone mid-channel and made his lead stick.  Watching the R-4 get treated so badly rattled me.  But pretty soon I found myself chasing Jeff and Teresa K (The Knakals in the R-2).  I hung on across the North leg of the triangle, but faded coming down the East side.  I looked and saw Paul creeping up on me and found a little more to finish with.  Found out later that Paul found a rock on that last stretch.  He fell in, but I'm thinking it was a "soccer flop".  There were some great back stories.  For example Amber The Hammer pounded the course in three hours in a touring kayak.  Considering that the best in show (Kevin) just barely got in under two, that says tenacious.

Race director is my new hero.  Conditions had the aspect of "i'm going to hurt someone"".  But he kept the faith and it paid off.  I hope some of you bums show up for the GSX (Great Cross Sound) in a couple of weeks.  It was strange to not have any Tracy of any spelling.  So then of course Shane and I ended up talking of all the ghosts of paddlers past.  Pretty cool race.

Oh Hey!!!!  Either this one or next year is the 40th running of this race.  Might be the first all human powered race in all of North America.  We might get T-shirts next year.

Pretty ugly boat, though.
Hope to see a bunch of you at Sammamish tomorrow.

My apologies for inadvertently, bothering you all with this post.  And for doubling down with this apology for bothering you with the apology.

Thanks!
