Tyler, sorry for the late notice but I have to watch my niece’s kids on Saturday. I was in contact with Theresa Knakal  and I would like to cast a vote for her after Shane nominates her for President. As for publicity notes I’ll give them to Shane.

Happy Holidays

Terrie

Re: 2018 Annual Meeting Nov. 10th

Rod Sternagel

Hi Tyler,

It is past Nov. 2nd but I would potentially like to add another item to agenda if possible. As I mentioned in a previous email Lake Stevens Rowing Club would like to be host a Sound Rowers Race sometime during the Sound Rower’s quiet season (November - March). Per Don Kiesling’s reply to my query last month, LSRC would like to discuss this at the board meeting. I will not be at the board meeting as I will be racing in California. Bob Cummins would represent LSRC at the meeting if we can have it on the agenda.

Concerning LaConner, I have submitted the date to Don and have preparations proceeding. I will likely move the lunch to the picnic shelter on the hill next to the bathrooms. We still do not have a sponsor to return to Shelter Bay and the school we used last year is fairly expensive ($493) after paying for the rental, janitor, and insurance (plus it took several months to get my billing). Since we are already paying for the shelter when we rent the bathrooms, there will be no extra charge. My wife and I will check it out one more time but I believe it is large enough to get everyone out of the weather — just not heated as the club and school have been. My wife (a.k.a. La Conner co-director), Deb, will try to make the meeting to answer any questions.

Please let me know if I should have Bob plan on attending the meeting and also let me know if you would like any other information concerning La Conner.

Thanks.

Rod Sternagel

I won't be able to attend these two races this year. If someone is interested in taking the photos, I would be happy to process them and post them on the Sound Rowers web site when I am able (sometime after 10/9).

A camera is available, too, if you are in need of one.

Let me know as soon as possible.

Thanks!

NW Paddling Festival looking for race director

watersprite

The Northwest Paddling Festival (May 11 & 12) is looking for an experienced racer to help coordinate our annual 2-mi and 6-mil paddling race on Saturday, May 12 at Lake Sammamish State Park. This race typically attracts 80 participants (both SUP and Kayakers). Ideally the race coordinator is familiar with race protocol and day-of race logistics. Strong public speaking skills desired. (Approximately 8-10 hour commitment over 2 days, or more if you’d like to be involved in planning phase!)

This is currently a volunteer position and would be a great fit for someone looking to build event experience, add to their resume, learn more about the boating and outdoor industry and work with a fun team! Volunteer benefits include free wristband for on-water demos, event t-shirt, volunteer swag, invitation to the exhibitor dinner Friday night, letter of recommendation and our highest appreciation.

Experience in the following areas is desired:

  • start/finish lines
  • course set up
  • racing rules
  • safety
  • timing/registration
  • presentation of awards

If you are interested, please email katiemc@...

Re: Forum comparison .... was: Re: New group server?

watersprite

Actually, canoetripping appears to be a fairly standard forum format, and if you look closely at the bottom of the page this particular forum is marketed by https://www.vbulletin.com

For Sound Rowers, I'm simply going to migrate our existing Yahoo content over to groups.io - all the old content is preserved, in theory, and the platform is much more workable and stable than Yahoo.

If we really want a full-fledged forum, I would first look into plug-ins for our website. We are not that chatty a group however (certainly by WhatcomPaddlers standards!). Plus Reivers is right, migrating existing content would likely be difficult at best, and likely not possible at all. The Facebook crowd seems to be growing well, and that and the other social media sites seem to be where the majority of online conversations are taking place these days.

And for the record, I was a Usenet junkie long before the world wide web....!

Forum comparison .... was: Re: New group server?

Reivers Dustin

Steve, &Traci...
The canoetripping forum looks like custom built forum.  Absolutely beautifully done.  My guess is that there is (or was) a deep techie who loves paddling that built this bulletin board from scratch.  That person (or team) might be long gone by now.  It would be a major task for any yahoogroup to migrate over to canoetripping.  For example: they might not want it, or we would be a subgroup, or moving old posts and data not possible.

Forums in general are older than the web.  When internet (connected computers) was only found at campuses and research facilities, they started creating BBS (bulletin boards) that hosted messages to a small member community.  None of us want to create a BBS from scratch.  Today there are dozens, typically dedicated to a single interest area.  The big names like yahoo, google, reddit, etc.  have 'hardened' their structure for their own best interests.  Since Yahoo has been bought by Verizon we are seeing a change in priority.  Yahoo is mining their group hosting systems for advertising and data collection.  There is a moderator group within yahoogroups for those of us who manage these groups.  The early indications are that yahoogroups will no longer be supported.  Of course yahoo (or Verizon) would never acknowledge this.  There are a whole ass-ton of customers involved, so like, can you say "Bad Publicity"?   When I started whatcompaddlers it was much easier to find archived messages.  But yahoo has dropped the message identification and no longer supports message topic or text searches.  I know of no other way to preserve older messages.  As it is today, even though this move preserves old messages, they are nearly impossible to find.  There are over 13 years of messages at a volume of 100 plus messages per month.   And some of these are actually not worth worrying about.  Except mine.  My messages will remain awesome for all time.  And yours.  And ... well. you can see where this goes.  Further reading:

Traci,

I'd be curious about your thoughts on this site:   http://www.canoetripping.net/forums/  I'll send you my password if you need it to explore.

What I like is the apparently easy archivablitiy, and the channelling of postings by topic. I have no Idea about it's practicality for our use.  it might be nice to have specialty sub-groups, but I know little about that either.

Does this mean that we will be losing all that Whatcom Paddlers History and Lore.. there is  a trove of stuff buried in that poorly archivable program that it'd be a shame to lose.  Reivers could write a book from it.
