snorlax.lampi.org back online
Michael Lampi <lampi@...>
Yahoo groups ate my previous message.
My personal web server (snorlax.lampi.org), which hosts the photos I took over the past couple of years of Sound Rowers events, had a catastrophic disk failure early this week. During the recovery process I managed to nuke the web site data as well. Don't ask. :-( It is now back online, and everything prior to June 30, 2003 should pretty much be as it was. Just about everything after that date should be OK, too, though I know a couple of my boating reports are AWOL. If anyone happens to notice anything awry please tell me. Thanks! --Michael Lampi

Not so rhetorical question
Michael Lampi <lampi@...>
This Saturday is the first Sound Rowers race of 2004.
As official club photographer I'd like to poll members to see if there is much interest in getting movie clips from the race in addition to whatever photographs I can take. Samples of photos and movies taken last Sunday under non-racing conditions can be found at http://snorlax.lampi.org/images/20040215/INDEX.HTM A somewhat faster link directly to a movie taken in rough conditions can be seen at http://www.openwatercycling.com/vidphotos/PICT0722.MOV A short movie of a rower is here http://www.openwatercycling.com/vidphotos/PICT0697.MOV I'll see what I can do to minimize the collection of spray on the lens. Thanks! Michael Lampi

Movie Dwnlds
Reivers Dustin
Micheal,
These are wonderful movies and photo's. But the movies are download hell. I have broadband (cable modem) and it takes a long time to load. Is there a better way to view them? In the past I've been able to right click and "save-as" in order to bypass application load up time. There are times when it's really worth it. Last year's LaConner race was a ripper that perhaps the survivors would like to re-visit. On the other hand, maybe those who's honor did not survive would just as soon forget that race. I guess perhaps categorizing or naming the movies is important. Are there any memory allocation considerations? Lastly, I hope a few others in the group appreciate what you are offering. No one else can physically do this (hands are busy) and few of us have the equipment to do it. You get my vote for "cool guy of the club" award. reivers

Onas soon forget that race. Are there any memory allocation considerations?guy of the club" award.Hi Reivers, I'll try to answer your questions in the order they were asked. 1. When trying to download some of the movies during the day I see about 600 to 800 Kbps transfer rates over my DSL using FTP, which is about half my DSL bandwidth. I would guess you should see about the same rate over your cable modem, if it is anything like my cable modem. 2. The camera saves these movies in Apple's Quicktime format. So far I have minimal utilities for editing or cleaning up these movies. This will probably change over time. Still, right now these movies can be accessed by either clicking on the thumbnail link, or by right clicking on the link which should bring up a menu. Clicking on the "save link target as" (in Mozilla/Netscape) or "save target as" (MSIE) menu item should let you do what you want with respect to starting the download without requiring the Quicktime viewer application to be running. Note that this is somewhat different from the way you were loading the pictures. 3. I agree. Some things are best forgotten, and others are made better by the retelling. :-) 4. You might be right in that people might prefer movies to be accessed via a different web page or set of web pages than the photo page. I thought it might be better to organize them chronologically, and I can't think of a reason not to continue to this way. Still, having another page or set of pages with direct links to the movies with appropriate captions, of course, is certainly something that could be done. 5. Right now the web server is limited to about 1 gigabyte of storage. The clips I've placed on the openwatercycling.com site range in size from 7.5MB to 44.5MB. The wavy movie is about 14MB. Personally, I think a lot of editing could be done to make any of these and future movies retain the interesting parts and remove the dull parts. This would help reduce the load. Also, I do have access to nearly unlimited space on another web server, snorlax.lampi.org. The only problem there is the network bandwidth is limited to 384Kbps. This is where all my Sound Rowers photos are currently stores. 6. Thanks! I'm not sure I'll be setting any records this year, however. It is too much fun snapping photos and taking movies. :-) Best regards, Michael Lampi

LaConner
Reivers Dustin
What a beautiful, crisp day. I think we all paddled/rowed twice as
much getting back from the turn mark as we did on the way out. And of course I really mucked up reading the currents on the way back in the slough. Blessings: clear skies, flat conditions, good company, great munchies after. Curses: parking tickets ( you get nailed on weekends now? I bet some local made a phone call...) It was a leeetle bit cold...downright nippley. I hear results are up on Sound Rower home page. going to go see. Maybe my bouyant mood is because I haven't seen results yet, hehe. rd

La Conner (and future) Photos
Michael Lampi <lampi@...>
The "official" La Conner photos are now up on the Sound Rowers web
site. I tell ya, some of you folks are quite photogenic! After talking with more club members, I was rather surprised to find out how many folks do not have broadband Internet access. It is a good thing that I've been resizing the images and thumbnails to reduce the amount of data being transferred over the net. Still, this also means that lots of club members are missing out on the opportunity to see themselves in "the big picture". I'm happy to accommodate people who are interested in the original 5 megapixel photos (roughly 2.5 to 3.5 MB in size) to e-mail one or two to them. However, if people would like to have all the full sized photos for a given race it would require them to be on a CD-ROM. In addition, if you have a DVD player it might be possible to play this CD-ROM on your TV. The quality would suffer tremendously compared to a PC monitor, unless you had HDTV, but it would be another way of showing friends and family your exploits. There would be some cost involved, but it could be done. Is there any interest in getting the race photos on CD-ROM? --Michael Lampi

Re: parking tix
Laura Jackson
Greetings -
My parents were rather peeved when they found out that a lot of folks got parking tickets, as they were told that guests at Maple Hall events were not supposed to have to pay parking. My mom was going to complain to the City, and the parking ticket lady said that if you got a ticket, to call the city and tell them you were at a Maple Hall function and had been told by the host that you didnt need to pay for parking. The bad news is that next year, we'll probably have to pay. Laura Jackson From: SoundRowers@..._________________________________________________________________ Dream of owning a home? This is the same format that is being used for Beverly's photos, or anyone else who wants to contribute photos to the Sound Rowers web site. The application used to generate the album is called JAlbum, which is a marvelous piece of free software available on the 'net. This should help folks with slower net access, as well as make it a bit easier for everyone to see beforehand if a given photo is what they want to see. Wing paddle/Scull theory
Reivers Dustin
Great post on the Yahoo surfski group:
clyde hedlund writes: The reason why the wing works so well is because, ifClyde, I usually agree with you. But you really picked on the wrong dog this time! Wings are more efficient than conventional paddles BECAUSE of the lift they create. And it's a LOT more than Bernoulli (Daniel Bernoulli is generally credited with the formula that exchanges potential/pressure energy of a flow with kinetic/velocity energy). Actually, NOONE has yet published what happens here, because even incredibly smart scientists don't "get it" yet. But there are some folks who are figuring this out. One place is Ken Young (unfortunately killed a couple of years ago in a car accident). http://www.phys.washington.edu/~wilkes/post/temp/phys208/scull.lift.ht ml The SAME thing happens to wing paddles (but not cenventioanls). I have a WHOLE dissertation on this topic, and wings are more efficient than conventionals for the same reason that static aerodynamics cannot explain why bumble bees can fly... Pekin Ferry Race March 27, 2004
shelferc <cshelfer@...>
Greetings
Just a reminder that this 6 mile race on the Lewis River out of Pekin Ferry Park is still on for Saturday, March 27, 2004. Race start time 10:00. Race fee is $10 which includes lunch. There is a $3 parking fee per car (so car-pooling would be good!). However, since last year USACK (which insures the race) has raised their fee rate for "day of race insurance" from $5 to $15. So if you are not a USACK member, the race will cost you $25. Please don't shoot the messenger! Hope to see lots of you there! Charlene For more information: Race Director: Bob Goodman bygoodman@...
