Having rowed these boats in Noli Italy several years ago I can tell you that they are good boats ideal for the conditions being rowed in however the significant drawback is their weight, you need a trailer. There are a lot of protentially good venues for this but it needs the engagement of the clubs, most individuals wont be trailering boats around to do this. Coastal rowing was developed in France and the rules for the boats were just to meet what was being produced at the time, heavy robust boats in fiberglass. As for ease of learning, yes they are more stable but it takes a lot of skill to row well in rough water not to mention a certain attitude of mind. Wik's version of coastal rowing is more like Australian surf boat racing, FISA coastal rowing is around a triangular course from a mass start on a start line, no 2 lane racing. Perhaps Mr Wik's intention is to spark interest in the boats but this format of racing is not FISA coastal rowing. Subject: [SoundRowers] US Rowing explains Coastal Rowing To: SoundRowers@... Date: Friday, 10 October, 2014, 18:50 COASTAL ROWINGWhat is coastal rowing?Coastal rowing is the extreme version, the adventure side of rowing. It involves rowing along a sea coast and out into the sea and is one of the fastest growing communities of rowers. It is especially popular in Italy, France and Great Britain to name a few. It can be found in all corners of the world including the Maldives and many parts of Africa. Coastal rowing boats are also used inland on some lakes and rivers where the water tends not to be flat. Rowing on rough water means that coastal rowing is quite different from the flat-water Olympic style of going in a straight line. Coastal rowers instead, often prefer rough water which adds a whole new dimension to the sport with many coastal rowers cherishing the exhilarating aspect of rowing in extreme conditions. Coastal rowing is easier to learn than flat-water rowing, due partly to the stability and robustness of coastal rowing equipment which differs from the Olympic-style boats. The standard boats are singles (or solo), doubles and coxed quadruple sculls. But just knowing how to handle a coastal rowing boat is not sufficient to become a good coastal rower. Crews must be aware of tides and currents, learn about the course's topography and know what to do in the midst of maritime traffic and in case of bad weather. Instead, buy a heavier, shorter boat and be like the French. #yiv4731826762 #yiv4731826762 -- #yiv4731826762ygrp-mkp { border:1px solid #d8d8d8;font-family:Arial;margin:10px 0;padding:0 10px;}
