Re: Digest Number 951 We got spammed!

Debbie Natelson

Steve Wells, My condolences.  Once your address book has been spammed like that, it IS a MAJOR hassle to correct it.  I had tried to send Steve B a heads-up a few days ago when I received some spam, but I don't think he checks his emails too often.  Big clue however, to look out for or be wary of it,
1. links that don't specifically refer to paddling/rowing/water safety or something SR specific.  To prevent spam confusion, if we send a link, we should make a point of describing what it's about or in reference to.
2.  When the subject line contains your name in it, as did the one that came today from our poor victim, Steve W, it screamed SPAM to me so I quickly deleted it. None of us (i hope) would ever send an email that has the recipients name as the subject line.  An email with a subject line; "Debby" (spelled wrong) is probably not one you want to open.
3.  An intro line, "Hey check this out..."  should now be received with great caution.

Steve, good luck in getting your email straightened out.  So sorry.

Jeff, in terms of a spamguard screen, I think we have the standard ones in place (Traci, help me out here), but just as humans design the filters, more diabolically clever humans can design ways to bypass and hack through these filters.

Spam-free wishes,
Debbie

I opened the link thinking it was some kind of neat paddling news from Steve B. I now have spent two days apologizing to many many friends and contacts for the spam. The message from our Group captured my contacts list. Then Yahoo shut down my mail account. Big pain in many butts. Sorry to you all for my part in this adventure.
